Position Overview

Under the guidance of a licensed funeral director, you’ll take part in every phase of funeral service:

  • Meeting with families and assisting with funeral arrangements
  • Planning and facilitating services and visitations
  • Ordering merchandise and coordinating logistics
  • Assisting with embalming, cosmetic preparation, and care of the deceased
  • Providing emotional and logistical support to families during services and committals

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist families in planning and personalizing funeral, memorial, and cemetery services
  • Coordinate service details, merchandise orders, and necessary documentation
  • Prepare and care for the deceased, including embalming, dressing, and casketing
  • Maintain funeral home cleanliness and readiness for services
  • Participate in removals and transportation of the deceased
  • Serve as a pallbearer and assist during visitations and funerals
  • Provide outstanding service by being punctual, attentive, respectful, and supportive at all times

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in, or recent graduate of, an accredited mortuary science program (or commitment to enroll within 3 months)
  • Ability to obtain a Wisconsin Funeral Director Apprentice license within 2 months of hire
  • No prior apprentice experience required—ideal for students beginning their career

 

Work Schedule & Environment

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position that provides exposure to all areas of funeral service. Your time will be evenly split between:

  • Office duties such as family meetings and service planning
  • Care of the deceased in the preparation room
  • Service participation, including visitations, funeral processions, and graveside committals

 

Apprentices will also rotate on-call shifts for first calls 1–2 nights per week , as well as participate in a rotating weekend schedule shared among licensed team members. Flexibility is essential, as hours may vary depending on the needs of the families we serve and the overall volume of services.

 

Compensation

Wages are competitive and negotiable based on experience and licensure status.
