Piasecki Funeral Home, located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is seeking a full-time funeral director to join our team.  Piasecki Funeral Home offers complete funeral and cremation services and serves more than 250 families per year.

A confident, outgoing personality combined with a willingness to learn, teach, and share your knowledge with co-workers and families, as well as proficiency and skills in web-based computer software, are essential traits for the candidate who will be considered to fulfill this role.

You will oversee the planning, organization, and management of all aspects of funeral services. Patience, compassion, emotional stability, punctuality, and finely-tuned organizational skills are a must.

 

Position Description

You will meet with families of the deceased, make funeral service and cemetery visit arrangements, order merchandise, arrange visitations and funeral services, facilitate outstanding and creative personalization arrangements, and address other family requests as necessary.  Duties will also include on-call shifts, embalming, and preparing the deceased for viewing.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with families of the deceased to discuss funeral arrangements and requests.
  • Explain pricing and product information to family and/or friends.
  • Order caskets, vaults, and other merchandise for funeral and memorial services.
  • Coordinate pallbearers, readers, musicians, and other participants in the funeral.
  • Accept and process payments for funeral services.
  • Ensure that set-up for the memorial service, wake, and funeral adheres to families’ wishes.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the funeral home.
  • Oversee transportation of the decedent’s remains to church and cemetery.
  • Assist with placing caskets in transport vehicles, then organize and operate various fleet vehicles in cemetery processions.
  • Serve as pallbearer and provide other assistance to the bereaved.
  • Address and resolve family issues or complaints.
  • Maintain positive relationships with vendors, church officials, and cemetery counselors.
  • Embalm and prepare deceased for viewing.
  • Apply cosmetics to impart lifelike appearance to the deceased.
  • Dress and casket the deceased.
  • Perform special procedures necessary for remains that are to be transported to other states or overseas, or where death was caused by infectious disease.
  • Maintain records such as itemized lists of clothing or valuables delivered with the remains and first-call notes, as well as clearly communicate information to other team members to ensure messages are delivered timely and accurately.
  • Operate a web/app-based funeral home management software throughout a first call, arrangement conference, embalming, and during post-service contact with the family.
  • Arrange funeral home equipment and perform general maintenance.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and precepting services to Funeral Director Apprentices.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Post-offer, pre-placement functional test: Pass a functional-based examination used to evaluate your ability to perform essential job functions such as lifting the deceased, removing the deceased from their location of death, and movement of caskets and other mortuary equipment.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and strong organizational skills.
  • Exhibit patience, empathy, and compassion.
  • Communicate calmly and kindly with co-workers, and bereaved family and friends.
  • Pay close attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, email, and digital scheduling application. Exhibit a thorough knowledge of funeral home management software.
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills.
  • Exhibit familiarity with, or willingness to accommodate, proper etiquette and procedure for a range of religious or cultural funeral services.
  • Possess strong listening skills.
  • Possess knowledge of embalming and burial services.

 

Education and Experience

  • No previous experience as a licensed Funeral Director is required. New graduates of mortuary science programs are encouraged to apply.
  • Licensure as a Funeral Director in the State of Wisconsin (required)
  • Licensure as a Funeral Director in the State of Illinois (preferred, required within one year of hire)

 

Work Environment

Your time will be spent equally in the office at the funeral home, meeting with families and making funeral arrangements, and preparing the deceased in the prep room. You will also be present at wakes and memorial services and will travel with the family to church and then to the cemetery and grave site following funeral services. Encompassed within in a 40-hour work week, you will be on call for first-calls 1-2 nights per week and be on call for first-calls and services every 2-3 weekends.  Hours and call rotation may vary depending on the needs the families and the call volume being experienced.
